India’s economy, once hailed as a global bright spot, is down in the dumps.
Growth in the South Asian nation fell during the first six months of 2017 from 7% to 5.7%, its slowest pace in three years, and analysts say the road to recovery is steep.
“We’re on a downward spiral,” said Mohan Guruswamy, head of the Center for Policy Alternatives in Delhi, and a former official at India’s finance ministry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept into power in 2014, promising to take India’s economy to new heights. But many reforms have yet to materialize and some changes that have been enacted are hurting growth.
Modi defended his performance in a speech Wednesday, claiming his government had helped several industries.
“It is true that there has been a reduction in growth, but it is also true that the government is fully committed to reversing this trend,” he said. “Our fundamentals are strong.”

Police: Las Vegas gunman did not plan to die inside room
Stephen Paddock could have spent more than 20 years plotting his devastating attack on innocent people in Las Vegas, police have revealed.
Officials also believe Paddock may not have acted alone.
Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said: “At face value he had to have some help at some point and we want to ensure that that’s the answer
“Maybe he was a superhuman who figured this out all on his own but it would be hard for me to believe that.”
Police confirmed the shooter “meticulously” planned his strike on the Route 91 Harvest Festival from his vantage points in the Mandalay Hotel.
Officers, who are investigating the double life of the cold-blooded killer, believe he spent decades acquiring weapons and living a “secret life”.
Police also told a news conference that 317 of the 489 people injured in the Las Vegas shooting have been discharged from hospitals.
His former girlfriend Marilou Danley has confirmed she had no idea Paddock was going to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
(…) She said: “It seemed she was telling us to either warn us, or she was part of it and she was telling us because she knew we were going to die. It was so scary.
“It felt like she had knowledge of what was about to happen.”
Ms Hendricks returned to the Mandalay hotel about 15 minutes before the shooting, and witnessed the subsequent carnage from her hotel room.
“It makes me feel uncomfortable,” said Ms Hendricks. “I thought it [the woman’s warning] had a correlation [to the shooting].”
She described the woman who gave the warning as “Hispanic, probably about 5ft 5, [with] brown hair”, and said the woman’s boyfriend was also Hispanic.
The authorities have yet to comment on whether the woman’s warning was just a bizarre coincidence, or whether it actually did have something to do with the mass shooting. (…)
Stephen Paddock a 64-year-old white man, has been named as the gunman who killed at least 59 people in the Las Vegas shooting(…).
The gunman opened fire from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where he had been holed up since Thursday September 28.
When officers broke into his room, they found that he had taken his own life.
Police found an arsenal of 23 guns in the hotel room, some of which were fitted with scopes. Paddock also had two “bump-stocks”, devices legal in the US which effectively turn semi-automatic rifles into automatic machine guns.
When detectives searched Paddock’s home in Mesquite, Nevada – a retirement community 80 miles out of Nevada – they found a further 19 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition and “electronic devices”, according to Count Clark Sheriff Joseph Lombardo. He would not expand on the latter.
Several pounds of ammonium nitrate, an explosive material, were found in Paddock’s car.
Mr Lombardo said that authorities are unsure of Paddock’s motives.
“I can’t get into the mind of a psychopath at this point,” he said.
Police are not treating the attack – the deadliest mass shooting on US soil – as terror-related, despite Nevada law defining terrorism as “any act that involves the use… of violence which is intended to cause great bodily harm or death to the general population”.
The killer was a multi-millionaire real estate investor and former accountant, according to his brother.
Eric Paddock said that his family was “dumbfounded” by the atrocity.
“He was just a guy,” he said. “Something happened, he snapped or something.”
Eric revealed that their father was a “psychopathic” bank robber who was once on the FBI’s most wanted list.
He described his brother as “not an avid gun guy at all” who had “no religious affiliation, no political affiliation” or history of mental illness.
He added: ”The fact that he had those kinds of weapons is just … where the hell did he get automatic weapons? He has no military background or anything like that.
“He’s a guy who lived in a house in Mesquite and drove down and gambled in Las Vegas.”
More details have also emerged on Paddock, the gunman.
From 1976 to 1985, Paddock worked federal government jobs: as a letter carrier for the Postal Service, an agent for the IRS and an auditor for U.S. government’s Defense Contract Audit Agency, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
Neighbors in several states where he owned homes in retirement communities described him as surly and unfriendly.
Relatives say the roots of Paddock’s loner lifestyle may have been planted July 28, 1960. On that day, when Paddock was 7, a neighbor from across the street took him swimming. The neighbor at the time told a local newspaper that she knew authorities were coming for his father, a bank robber, and she wanted to spare the boy the trauma of seeing his father hauled away by authorities.
From that point on, Paddock’s family was never the same.
His mother struggled to raise him and his brothers on her own. His father escaped from prison — twice — and had little more contact with them, relatives say. As they grew older, Stephen, the eldest, and the youngest brother, Eric, kept in touch, but Stephen Paddock drifted almost completely out of touch with his two other brothers, Bruce and Patrick.
Eric said that Stephen stopped talking to his brother Bruce because Bruce used to beat him up when they were kids and that Stephen stopped talking to Patrick because they’re very different people.
Even with Eric he never talked much. They created a lucrative real estate investment business together, but Stephen would only text Eric now and then.e
Alex Jones of Infowars fame took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to share a photo of what he claims is the aftermath of Stephen Paddock’s suicide.
The graphic photo, which you can see below, shows a man with his head covered in blood, laying on a floor that is covered in what appears to be hotel room carpet. There is a pool of blood surrounding the man’s head, which would suggest that he shot himself in the head or in the mouth. The ground around him is littered with shell casings. You can see the photo below (warning, it is very graphic):
It seems most likely that deceased on the picture is not the one who is claimed have done that. But we can’t determine that fully since the way how picture is delivered.
It feels though like another set up…. It smells JFK a bit… That is my opinion.
Besides all of the sudden when independent media are having some second thoughts about what really happened… we have full panoramic picture on Main Stream Channels about what and how things took place… With new time frame etc… All is working now… Right?
A plaque has been removed from Canada’s Holocaust memorial because it neglected to mention Jewish people.
PM Justin Trudeau opened the National Holocaust Monument last week in the capital Ottawa.
The plaque commemorated the “millions of men, women and children murdered” but did not specifically mention Jewish people or anti-Semitism.
About six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, the largest group to be persecuted by the Nazis.
The omission was seized upon by MPs and senators of the opposition Conservative Party on Tuesday.
“If we are going to stamp out hatred toward Jews, it is important to get history right,” said MP David Sweet.
Six people were killed by a powerful storm that swept through northern and eastern Germany on Thursday, knocking down trees and cranes and causing commuter havoc.
At least four of the victims were killed by trees that crushed their cars in the eastern state of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as the cities of Berlin and Hamburg.
The storm reached category 3, on a 4-point scale. At one point the German Weather Service (DWD) said the storm reached hurricane-strength wind speeds of between 105 and 115 kilometers (65 and 71 miles) per hour.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded when trains ground to a halt because most railway lines were blocked with fallen trees. Deutsche Bahn canceled long-distance trains to and from Berlin as well as services in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen and commuter trains in Hamburg.
Logically it should be left over from Maria and Lee that were joined together and headed towards UK o few days ago… But all of the sudden last week of before Friday all tracks of the Lee and Maria and as well any articles disappeared from the net.
I had links and was using them tracking maps and life up dates of articles and was nothing there after… Pages with no tracks and no articles…
I am sure though that now even weather has strategic and political value so there is nothing that we can trust anymore. It is not even “total police system” anymore!
As tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula, a new report has estimated that, should North Korea deploy its nuclear arsenal on Seoul and Tokyo, the death toll could be up to 2.1 million, with around 8 million injured.
Over the past few months, the stand-off, with Pyongyang on one side, and the US and its allies on the other, has been escalating, with belligerent rhetoric and provocative military posturing on both sides. Amid these tensions, a study by 38 North – a site on North Korean affairs run by Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies – has revealed the potential consequences of a nuclear strike launched by the North on its neighbors.
A huge iceberg measuring 185 square kilometers (72 square miles) has calved from Pine Island Glacier – one of the main outlets where ice from the West Atlantic Ice Sheet flows into the ocean.
The iceberg, named B-44, which is about the same size as Washington D.C., broke away from the glacier’s floating ice shelf sometime between September 21, when a rift was clearly visible in an picture captured by the Operational Land Imager, and September 23, when the complete break was seen in radar imagery.
The Pine Glacier has been calving more large icebergs recently. It’s long record of stability was interrupted in 2001, 2007, 2013 and 2015 – the latter in July of that year when it spawned a 583-square-kilometer (225-square-mile) berg.
The most recent berg has been attributed to warming ocean waters eroding the base of the floating ice tongue, according to Adrian Luckman, a scientist with Project Midas, a British Antarctic research group who spoke to USA Today, however it “usually difficult to pinpoint climate change as the culprit for icebergs” in general said Luckman.
