The life-saving antibiotic of “last resort” is in danger of becoming powerless after a drug-resistant gene was found to have spread across the globe in the last two years. Scientists believe it’s one of the greatest dangers now facing humanity.

A bacteria containing a gene which carries resistance to the antibiotic colistin has spread around the world at an alarming rate. The gene is mcr-1 and was first discovered in China in 2015, and has since been found in more than 30 other countries.

Colistin is known as the antibiotic of “last resort,” because it is used when patients no longer respond to other antibiotics. It has toxic side effects but doctors are increasingly using it as a result of antibiotic resistance.

“The world is facing an antibiotic apocalypse,” England’s chief medical officer Sally Davies said, the Guardian reports.

The terrifying prospect that even routine operations will be impossible to perform has been raised by experts alarmed by the rise of drug-resistant genes.

Scientists attending a recent meeting of the American Society for Microbiology reported they had uncovered a highly disturbing trend. They revealed that bacteria containing a gene known as mcr-1 – which confers resistance to the antibiotic colistin – had spread round the world at an alarming rate since its original discovery 18 months earlier. In one area of China, it was found that 25% of hospital patients now carried the gene.

Colistin is known as the “antibiotic of last resort”. In many parts of the world doctors have turned to its use because patients were no longer responding to any other antimicrobial agent. Now resistance to its use is spreading across the globe.

In the words of England’s chief medical officer, Sally Davies: “The world is facing an antibiotic apocalypse.” Unless action is taken to halt the practices that have allowed antimicrobial resistance to spread and ways are found to develop new types of antibiotics, we could return to the days when routine operations, simple wounds or straightforward infections could pose real threats to life, she warns.

That terrifying prospect will be the focus of a major international conference to be held in Berlin this week. Organised by the UK government, the Wellcome Trust, the UN and several other national governments, the meeting will be attended by scientists, health officers, pharmaceutical chiefs and politicians. Its task is to try to accelerate measures to halt the spread of drug resistance, which now threatens to remove many of the major weapons currently deployed by doctors in their war against disease.

Scientists say they are alarmed by the rise of drug-resistant genes in humans that could soon return us to the days when simple injuries or straightforward infections posed a real threat to life.

Biomedical scientists at a recent meeting of the American Society for Microbiology revealed that bacteria containing an mcr-1 gene which confers resistance to colistin — the “antibiotic of last resort” — has become disturbingly widespread over the 1.5 years since its discovery.

Radiation monitors have detected radioactive particles in the air across Europe, although the source remains a mystery.

Germany’s Office for Radiation Protection reported increased radioactivity in parts of Central and Western Europe over the last week. The heightened levels were detected at several trace measuring stations in Europe, and at six locations in Germany.

The particles are ruthenium-106, an isotope used in cancer radiation therapy for eye tumors and at times in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) which provide power to satellites. An increase of ruthenium-106 has been detected in the air in Austria, France, Germany,

A highly drug-resistant strain of malaria dubbed “super malaria” is spreading rapidly in South East Asia, leading scientists to warn that it could soon be a global threat.

The disease, most commonly transmitted by mosquitoes infected with the parasite, was first detected in Cambodia in 2008 but has now spread to the three remaining countries that make up the Eastern Greater Mekong subregion: Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

In a letter, published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, the team studying the spread of the disease from the Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit in Bangkok, said the rapid spread “presents one of the greatest threats to the control and elimination of malaria.”

Adding that the fact it is mostly drug resistant is a “sinister development”.

“A single mutant strain of very drug-resistant malaria has now spread from western Cambodia to northeastern Thailand, southern Laos and into southern Vietnam and caused a large increase in treatment failure of patients with malaria,” letter co-author Prof. Arjen Dondorp said.

“This could result in an important increase in malaria transmission in these countries and severely jeopardize their malaria elimination efforts,” he added.

Dondrop hopes that this new evidence will be used to combat the diseases spread in the region before it becomes “close to untreatable.” His colleague, Prof Nicholas White, thinks that “we are losing a dangerous race” and that something must be done to tackle this public health emergency urgently.

Roughly 212 million people are infected with the disease each year, the majority of cases, 92 percent, are in Africa. If this super malaria strain spread to the continent the effects would be disastrous.

The Catalan leader says he “assumes the mandate that Catalonia should become an independent state in the form of a republic.” Local MPs also signed what they called “a declaration of independence”, suspending it temporarily though to facilitate dialogue with Madrid.

Catalonia restores today its full sovereignty,” the document titled the “Declaration of the representatives of Catalonia” read, Reuters reported.

We call on all states and international organizations to recognize the Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state,” the document signed by Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and other regional politicians says.

However, its legal status remains unclear.

Catalonia won the right to be an independent state during its recent referendum on the issue, as there was a clear “yes” vote, Puigdemont announced Tuesday.

It’s not a personal decision,” but the result of the vote on “self-determination,”he added.

The Spanish government considers the Catalan’s leader speech a declaration of independence, El Pais reports, adding that Madrid is now “preparing an answer.” However, there is no official statement on that so far.

Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria has announced an emergency Cabinet meeting on the Catalonia independence issue scheduled for Wednesday.

The leader of Catalonia was making a much-anticipated address to his parliament. It is his first speech since the controversial October 1 referendum on the region’s independence from Spain.

This is a special and historic moment having a long outreach,” the Catalan leader said, arguing that the current situation in the EU state is “not only a domestic affair.”

Breaking – North korea ship seized with huge weapons cargo en route to egypt amid ww3 fears.

A North Korea ship was seized after it was caught carrying a huge supply of weapons to Egypt as tensions continue to mount with the US.

More than 30,000 rocket-propelled grenades discovered on board the freighter named the Jie Shun which the hermit kingdom had decorated with deceptive Cambodian colours.

Despot leader Kim Jong-un’s cargo was stopped in its tracks when the US warned Cairo about the incoming ship.

An investigation launched by the United Nations found that Pyongyang had made nice with Egyptian business executives who had ordered millions of dollars worth of North Korean weaponry.

The monumental weapons supply was disguised under bins of iron ore that were used as a front for the hugely destructive delivery.

Russian Border Patrol on the hills between North Korea and Russia.

A RUSSIAN company has reportedly been providing North Korea with internet despite increased sanctions from United Nations and amid claims of cyberattacks from US.

The connection from Russian TransTeleCom began appearing in internet routing databases at 10.08pm GMT, around 5.38pm Pyongyang time, on Sunday evening.

Internet users in North Korea and those accessing websites run by the Kim Jong-un’s regime were all funnelled along the same route connecting the North Korean ISP and the global internet, which is a China Unicom link that has been in operation since 2010.

Doug Madory, who analyses global Internet connectivity at Renesys, said: “The addition of Russian transit would create new internet path out of the country, increasing its resilience and international bandwidth capacity.”

Big banks, even bigger profits: America’s leading banks are minting money.

Five of the country’s biggest banks are expected to rain down a combined $21 billion in profits this week.

The vast quarterly earnings from JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and PNC are likely to account for nearly half of the entire banking industry’s profits.

It’s no wonder Wall Street is feasting on bank stocks. Investors are betting bank profitability will only be enhanced by proposed corporate tax cuts and deregulation. These positives have overshadowed hiccups from turbulent trading revenue and soft loan growth.

Not surprisingly, JPMorgan (JPM) remains at the front of the class. Not only is JPMorgan the most valuable U.S. bank and the one with the most assets ($2.1 trillion), but it’s the most profitable. Jamie Dimon’s company, kicking off the parade of bank earnings on Thursday morning, is expected to post $6.4 billion in profits.

Bank of America (BAC) and Citigroup continue to hit milestones in their taxpayer-assisted recovery from the financial crisis. For the first time since 2007, Citi is worth over $200 billion. That’s thanks to a 52% surge in Citi’s (C) stock price since President Trump’s election.

BofA celebrated a landmark of its own last week. Its stock price topped $26 for the first time since September 2008, the month Lehman Brothers collapsed. Of course, it’s still shy of the all-time high of $55 set in November 2006, before subprime became a bad word.

Even Wells Fargo (WFC) continues to rake in fat profits — it’s expected to post $5 billion in earnings on Friday. But CEO Tim Sloan should face tough questions about Wells Fargo’s recent auto insurance and mortgage fee controversies. The bank’s chronic scandals have left it out of the bank party on Wall Street.

And don’t forget about PNC (PNC). The No. 6 U.S. bank by assets is the one poised to reveal the strongest earnings growth from last quarter.

EyeDetect: The Future of Lie Detection is Here.

The pupils of our eyes are terrible liars.

Scientists have long known this. Our pupils widen ever so slightly when we’re being deceptive. The change is so minor — fractions of a millimeter — that the average person would never notice.

But now a Utah-based company called Converus has a test that uses a camera to track eyes and sense deception. The technology, called EyeDetect, is gaining popularity as a more affordable, less biased version of a polygraph exam, which has long been the gold standard for detecting lies.

“The eyes are the window of the soul,” said Juan Becerra, an investigator at Panther Security and Investigations. He used to work with polygraphs at the FBI and now uses EyeDetect. “This is something that’s revolutionary and that’s going to change the entire deception detection field.”

EyeDetect, which launched in 2014, is used today in 34 countries as part of job interviews and corporate investigations. Latin American banks, for example, use the technology to determine if their tellers can be trusted. Research has shown the accuracy rates of EyeDetect and polygraph are similar, both nearing 90%.

Protesters have gathered in Paris to march against Emmanuel Macron’s labour reforms. It’s thought that 45,000 people took part, while 400,000 people are said to have marched across the country. The nine federations of the civil service, which have 5.4 million employees, called for a day of strike and demonstrations.

Public sector unions representing over 5 million French workers are going on a nationwide strike on Tuesday to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s labor reforms. Schools, hospitals and transport will be affected, with 30 percent of flights across the country canceled.

It’s the first time in a decade that all the major unions, representing almost 20 percent of French workers, have united behind a protest call, Le Figaro reported.
